The Junior Prom was the scene for a lot of life altering moments. Drew sat at the help desk in the library. He was spending a boring, very slow, afternoon covering for the research librarian who had gone home early. A student came up to ask him a question. Drew looked over her shoulder at a table near the back wall. The student asked the question again. Still lost in a long since filed away memory, he shrugged and told her to ask the head librarian.

Originally, at least how he remembered it, Drew was going to go with Amber. He asked her to go, as friends, because neither had a date. The week of the prom, Amber came by one afternoon and asked if he would step aside so some boy she met at a gig could take her. They sat on his bed, she held his hand tightly, while both of them lied through their teeth about how great it was to just be friends.

Drew asked Amber's mother to drop him off where Theresa was staying. Inside, all he could find the words to say was “she canceled.” Theresa nodded, looked down briefly, and walked over to the closet. From inside she pulled out an evening gown and shoes. Drew started laughing until the glare Theresa gave him made him realize this was not funny.

She placed the gown on a chair and sat next to him on the bed, pulling him tightly against her. After burying her head in his shoulder for a minute, she sat up straight and turned his head towards her. “You are such a fucking idiot, Drew.”
