I rarely give up on games, but, after enjoying the first Final Fantasy on the Origins disc, the Playstation adaptation of Final Fantasy II was just too aggravating for me to finish. I got about 20% through the game before giving up. A variety of factors brought me to this decision: the lack of a concrete storyline that made any sense and a tedious experience system did not help.

The experience system is legendary for being quite controversial. In FFII, unlike most RPG’s, experience is only gained by actually performing an action, not just based on the group’s completion of a battle. This lends an interesting level of difficulty that probably allows inventive gamers to do some really neat things. The problem with FFII, however, is that the game is very slow and extremely tedious. Leveling up takes ages, reminding me of the first Dragon Warrior game for the NES, and is haphazard at best. It’s a nice experiment for sure, but I’ll stick to traditional RPG’s or tactical games.
