Google Docs

For the past few days I have been playing around with Google Docs a lot. In fact I am creating this post in it. So far, I really like it: I enjoy the portability and ease of use, the file management system allows folders for organized storage, and most of all I love the idea of having a document open in a Firefox or Opera tab. There is a lot of potential in Google Docs for group synchronization and other sorts of distributed works. I think this is going to up my productivity a lot. While I love using OpenOffice for documents, having a program right in my browser is something I have wanted for years. The only issue I have seen so far is the lack of a simple means to backup your work. Each document has to be manually backed up. The good news is that you can export to a number of different file types, the bad news is that if you have a lot of files this can become a burden very quickly. Someone wrote a Greasemonkey script (also available as a Firefox plugin) for backing up multiple files at once. Perhaps I am doing something wrong, but I am finding it very buggy so far. Google Docs is still in beta like a lot of Google’s products, so that is something which will be dealt with in a future versions most likely.
